I'm not saying your "scenarios" below aren't possible ones, but I really believe part of this comes down to people needing to be more selective who they choose to spend the rest of their lives with.
I bought a house, got married, we had a kid, and then got divorced, so I'm not saying I'm perfect ... but I am saying I made some mistakes and learned a lot from them.
Other than the very first job I ever had (telemarketing for a carpet cleaning place), I've always worked in computers and I.T. It's not only my sole source of income, but also a passionate hobby interest outside of work. Knowing this, I finally concluded that it's just plain foolish for me to try to have a serious relationship with any woman who doesn't "get" the whole technology thing, or thinks it's a "big waste of money". And you know what? That rules out a whole LOT of women out there, who can easily rationalize away their "need" for multi-hundred dollar new dresses or pairs of shoes, but just can't see why you could possibly need a new hard drive when "you already bought one of those things just a few years ago!".
Everyone wants different things out of their relationships ... but I'm just speaking for myself here. Some guys really don't CARE how the money they earn gets spent, as long as they've got a roof over their head, food on the table, and a wife and kids to come home to. Others have to be in control of every penny spent. Still others WANT to have to ask their wife for permission all the time, because they feel they're bad at managing money and would rather leave it up to her to do it all for them.
Right now, I'm about to get married to a terrific woman who works in I.T. like I do, and shares a lot of the same values and interests I have. Neither of us makes the kind of income we'd like to make and with 3 kids between us? Things can get pretty tough at times. But I think both of us share the idea that "If you earn the money yourself, you get to spend it on whatever you want. I don't care or need to know, as long as we've both done our share to cover the essentials first."
Cute story, but it has nothing to do with the situation. Also, you've pointed out that he (who you quoted) was right in his analysis that the factor here was: you earn more than enough money to afford the purchase, therefor, no issue.
iPads are far from "needs", and some people shouldn't be buying them, even though they may want them.
But, some people make stupid decisions, and sometimes the wives of stupid people have to be the one to say, "stupid move, now bring it back"

The one thing to remember is that this is a Developer's Conference so there is not going to be a lot of pizazz with flashy announcements. There was not a whole lot of new mind-blowing things announced so he could have been a little bit bored with it.
Bored with such trivial things as THE OPERATING SYSTEM that runs his entire corporation! I highly doubt that's the case.

A study was done which showed that since the advent of online dating reported cases of people on the autistic spectrum increased; it's thought that the people who spent most of their time online were able to find partners and procreate, without having to do the whole rigmarole of courting, flirting, etc.
A little off topic, but that study sounds so horribly biased and based on such seriously flawed logic on so many levels, that I fine myself baffled that someone could even come up with such a conclusion. I'm sure they ignored the age of people dating online, if they were still even able to procreate (since online daters are usually older), potential problems with having children at an older age (such as genetic mutations, premature labor), other reasons for the increase in autism (such as increased awareness or more refined diagnostic testing), environmental factors, geez the list of confounders is endless.

I ranked this as a neg only since there are supply chain issues... why add another retailer?
Select Radio Shack stores have the iPhone also. So it is not a surprise they would carry the ipad or even iPods
The timing suggests two possibilities
1. The contract mandates this date regardless of any issues
2. There aren't any supply issues, or very shortly won't be

So 9to5's retraction is because a bunch of you guys were giving him fraudulent tips?
That's shameful, I thought we were better than that.
I was just coming on to see what was up with that. Did someone from here really send in a tip? What good does that do? Its not like Apple is going to go on MacRumors and say "Well there is a rumor we are going to release, lets just do it".....Stupid!

I'm really sorry if I sounded a bit harsh... I didn't really mean to... :o
It's just that this has been explained over and again so I roll my eyes more as a reflex... ;)
No offense taken-did not think you harsh. As I was typing it I thought " Oh boy, I'm sure this is one of those constant quaetsions" - should I be doing this.
Was afraid Cundles might have gone ballistic. Especially after Tuesdays constant postings of some very old news:)

While for me, $500 is a "pretty big wad of cash to throw down", there's more to it than strictly looking at the dollar figure. EG. Do you have a kid or kids that might benefit from being able to use the new iPad you're about to purchase? Do you have legitimate uses for it that go along with EARNING more money, or maybe even the ability to write the whole purchase off as a tax deduction the next year? When you spend $20 on some beer or a few bucks on some food, it's a consumable you use once and throw some trash away, and then you have nothing to show for it.
One thing I know about myself is, I'm very hesitant to spend much on "instant gratification" type of entertainment. I practically never spend money on tickets for sporting events or concerts, and maybe buy a movie ticket once a year. I've often skipped summer vacations completely because my employer didn't want me to take time off when they had important projects going on, and I just opted to get paid for the days instead. I don't even have cable or satellite TV at home, because I hated watching $60 or more per month just vanish into thin air, with nothing concrete to show for it later. So when I do spend my money? It tends to be on bigger-ticket items I know I'll get a lot of use out of for years down the road.
So frankly, in my relationships, "respect" is just as much about my partner respecting my ability to make sensible purchasing decisions and NOT demand I consult with her first, simply because it's something a lot more expensive than a fast food order.
Great post, completely agree, and am also inline with your mentality about spending money. The same people who ask me why the hell I would spent $1700 on a laptop when I can get one for $700 (I have a Macbook Pro, which I use several hours EVERY SINGLE DAY, will last years, and which I work and make money from) are the same people who would spend that difference in a month on stupid ****, eating out, and alcohol, with nothing to show for it. I have no problem spending more on long term purchases to get a better product, or something I'm passionate about which will bring me pleasure for a long time.

New Nanos are available at the 5th Ave. store in New York. I picked up the black 8GB this morning. Also, they are giving the educational discount on them. Perhaps they only disabled it online.
The Apple Store at Arden Fair in Sacramento, CA is supposed to start selling all the new iPod models today. If I had the money I'll spring for a 4 GB Silver nano. :D

The package is 52% smaller.
The new Nano just a fraction thinner.
does anyone know exactly how much thinner the new nanos are? im sure it is just a few centimeters, if not millimeters but i am still curious.

I don't really notice a louder volume. I think apple can still improve on the volume.
have you guys realize how bad the volume controls are on the macbook? when the volume is at half, basically nothing is audible. the first 5-6 bars on the volume control are absolutely garbage (except when headphones are plugged in).

People already piss and moan about it. If apple really wanted to have a low environmental impact they would build their products where they have Higher standards for environmental quality.

Have you ever used a Palm ? Palm ebooks have been around for years, and could not save the Palm platform...
I have bought several of these, stored them on a SD card, and: never got around to read them. It is simply not good to read on such a small screen ! When the first Voyager Hypercard ebooks came out, I used my Powerbook 100 to read "Jurassic Park" during a beach vacation (of course not on the beach, but in the evenings). I kept several of these Hypercard books in my Mac, and used to read them in my office when I had some spare time. I am also using my iPods for audible audiobooks. But even on my PAlm TX I never read more than necessary. It is annoying to have these short lines and to scroll all the time. This is definitely NOT a reading experience !!
And: Steve Jobs never will NEVER implement anything in an iPod which has such a long and miserable history as ebooks...

Not at all. I've had predictions go wrong before, so this is nothing new to me. But it just annoys me that some people are so concerned with getting the best computer at the moment when it'll only be the best for a few months at best, and in the case of the MacBook, isn't even the best.
lol, people will always want the latest and greatest in this consumerist society. thats what makes america, america! if u dont like it, go to europe :p (im joking, plz, no one take offense)

i'm not 100% sure, but you could swap the hd on your photo with a 240gb hd,
many have done this before.
(i'm sure you can do it with the "thick" 5g ipod, the 4g ipod may have a different hd connector)
i think the 5g ipod is the best piece of engineering ever made to listen to music outdoor.
i've never liked the "innovative" split screen software on 6g (classic), and my 80gb was somewhat slow and suffered click wheel issues, never fixed.
i really regret i've sold my 5g 60gb white ipod.. i've paid it 450€ 5 years ago!!!
I've done it on two 5.5g iPods. The problem is iTunesDB on the iPod breaks down when you get to around 33,000 songs (and Rockbox doesn't do any better). Nobody really gets it right anyway, I bought a 500 gb Android Tablet (Archos 5) and it too breaks down around 33,000 songs.
I'd love to see a big iPod classic or a touch with a HD. But for now I have to settle for streaming to my phone with AudioGalaxy. But then you have to deal with loss in quality and bandwidth restrictions on both your home ISP and your cell provider.

^ Uhm. Popularity does not imply quality.
Neither does obscurity. However, success in the music industry is generally measured by how many people like a musician's work. Ask any musician whether they'd rather create music that appeals to 4 people, or 40,000,000 people. Your individual lack of appreciation of The Beatles doesn't diminish their success, collectively and individually. To discount their accomplishments and influence is to display monumental naivet?.

Is it that you do not want to allow independent action? Where then is free will? Where are other faiths? Does the giving of alms by Muslims count for nothing, too?
I'm sorry skunk, but I'm not quite sure how to explain it any better than I already have. As I stated above, free will is an essential aspect of what the Bible reveals about our relationship with God. I don't follow where you think I've indicated that there is no room for the allowance of independent action.
As for all human actions that could be considered altruistic, good, sacrificial, etc. (including the actions of other faiths), like I said in my previous post:
On a human level these actions are noble and sacrificial and I applaud them. However, on a spiritual level, I must recognize that scripture teaches us that our "good deeds" are worthless if our heart is not right with God.
Please understand, this doesn't mean that the positive results of these actions are meaningless. For example, giving food to the homeless is a sacrificial act that does help people in need, but it will in no way earn you "points" with God. The Bible does not teach a theology of works. It's not about what you do, it's about your relationship with Christ.
