What the hell kind of relationship do you people have with your spouses?? I mean, seriously??! You need their explicit PERMISSION to buy something you want, with your money, and it gets to their point of people BEGGING their wives to let them buy something, only to be turned down?!
In red is your problem. In marriage you're a unit; there is no "your" money or "my" money.. it's "our" money. If there are things more important to the unit than an iPad (I can think of many, many possibilities), then you're contorting the wife's stance unfairly.
And, just for the record, for the women/wife bashing that's happened in the thread I'd like to point out that it can go both ways. I'm a wife and we were standing in line on launch day for ME.. my husband would never have blessed the purchase if it came from joint funds. This is the beauty of separate "fun" accounts. An allowance per se for each of us, free from the negotiations that happen from joint accounts (and to anyone that argues that it's ridiculous that big purchases from joint money have to be discussed is going to be in for a rude awakening come marriage, IMO). More couples should have 'em.

I say iTunes Movie Store and new iPod nanos. Possibly a rev of the iMacs, since they were the first ones to go Intel.
I really don't see a new iPod with video, but I could be wrong... i was last year when the 5G came out.

LOL! This is just a Hollywood studio's desperate wet dream.
They are realizing that 3D is turning into a fad instead of the money cow they were expecting. With a few exceptions the studios are losing a lot of money with 3D and now hope Apple will turn their turd into gold...

An "Image Sensor" is not a camera. The sensor is part of a camera. In addition to a sensor one needs to add at least a lens, some buffer memory and a controller. Sony makes image sensors for many, other camera makers.
8MP is way to many pixels for a cell phone camera. The only reason to have so many is for marketing purposes because consumers seem to think (wrongly) that more is better. What really limits sharpness of a cell phone camera is the physical size of the lens. If the lens projects a blurred image onto the focal plane the best sensors will simply make a very good recording of the blurred image.

'fixed' for me.
ironically the DAY they released the update.my macbook started shutting down intermittingly..
instaleld it..works fine so far.as for the fans..they still go 'nuts' when i run a few videos on youtube..is THAT normal?
like they get pretty loud ugh
The loud fan ISN'T normal, and it's something I've been fighting about with Apple ever since I bought this POS machine a day after they were released. I'm on my second one now (the first one was replaced because it was broken right out of the box), and this one sounds like a jet airplane getting ready for take off, with the turbines winding up and down.
What particularly makes me upset is that we've got two MacBooks in my family, mine and my wife's, and hers is completely silent. When the fan does kick in on her machine, it makes a nice "whoosh" sound of air being pushed, and nothing else. Mine make this whiney noise coming from the fan itself, so loud you can't even heard the "whoosh" of air being moved.
My MacBook has already been in AppleCare once for a fan replacement, as well as the heat-sink replacement. I had hoped this new firmware would slow the darned fan down, but nope--it's still buzzing away like an electric razor.
I've owned five Apple laptops prior to this one (dating back to a PowerBook 520), and this MacBook is by far the worst one of the bunch. Worse even than my "flaming" PowerBook 5300 (which still works and doesn't make a peep).

2008 iMac 20" with the following specs:
Intel Core 2 Duo @ 2.66GHz, 4GB RAM @ 800MHz, 500GB @ 7200 RPM, ATI Radeon HD2600 @256MB
Harman/Kardon Soundsticks II
Logitech MX Revolution
Laptop - MacBook Pro 13" with the following specs:
Intel Core 2 Duo @ 2.4GHz, 4GB RAM @ 1066MHz, 250GB @ 5400RPM, Nvidia Geforce 320m
As you can see the Apple keyboard is a bit broken... I think I'm gonna replace it with Logitech diNovo Mac Edition.
I also have an iPhone 4 (32GB)
I used to have a 2nd monitor connected to the iMac (Dell 2007WFP, very nice monitor), but now I have connected the iMac to my 32" Samsung (running Plex) and the cable under the iMac is a mini-toslink connected to my Logitech Z5500. Behind the iMac I have a Western Digital MyBook Studio Edition @ 1TB
Things I want for my setup right now is a new desk, Just Mobile's Alupad and their Xtand for MacBook Pro. Oh, and a new keyboard (as mentioned above)...
Next year I'm planning to buy the 2nd generation iPad and when I get a job I'll start saving for either a 27" iMac or a Mac Pro + Dell U2711 (oh well, that's the dream...)

Yes, I like to have it all with me.
I listen to music for 9 hours a day when I'm at work and used to get frustrated with my old 60GB iPod photo because I only had half of my collection with me. I've had my 160GB classic since 2007 and I'm now down to my last 5GB of free space.
A new 220GB classic in September would be perfect timing. :D
I guess we will have to agree to disagree on the music/iPod thing, as I listen to my iPhone for 8+ hrs a day and find 5200 songs overkill. I will agree with you on this; if I had all the money I'd spent on drink, I'd spend it on drink.
Cheers!

Figure a new umpc, maybe a tablet, and make it always connected via some new 3/4G network. They'll make a tiny device that people will always carry.
This is my guess too. Very small notebook with built in 3G from AT&T. Data plan available for $20 a month or included with your iphone cell plan.
I seem to remember something coming up a few weeks ago where AT&T was thinking about offering their data plan as a standalone option and this would certainly fit.

As much as i hate to admit it, i have to agree with dime on this one. European countries cannot defend themselves, their militaries are a joke. The US pretty much has to do everything on their own, and then we take the heat for everything. Which is pretty much where american arrogance comes from. Sad but true.
On what grounds do you say that? Which of the foremost European countries such as the UK, France, Germany etc. do you think would be unable to defend themselves in a military conflict with a nation that is anything other than orders of magnitude greater in population such as the US, China or India? The scale is completely relative to the other powers at play, and I don't think they exist like you seem to think they do.
That being said, if Republicans put half the effort into saying what Obama is doing is wrong as they did into legislating, this country would be far better off.

One reason seldom mentioned is people who like a dozen or two Beatles songs but because they are spread across 10 different albums have never bought the CDs.
Now they can buy (just) the songs they like. And I did. (Bought 12 last night and will probably get another 5 or 10.)

Did anyone else expect a Beatles announcement after all the mentions they got? He played two Beatles songs, name checked a couple of albums and even used their album art in his summary.
It looked like he was setting up for a by the way kind of announcement, not that the Beatles should ever be mentioned as an aside. Certainly when the first mention of them came up capitalised on the macrumorslive report I thought something might be up but it all came to nothing - why do you tease us so Steve?I figured with Steve's magic powers he would bring the 4 Beatles on stage and have them play something for us. I guess even Steve has his limits.

I love the idea. A yellow 80GB iPod with the full Beatles collection (or black with the yellow dial). A huge score for Apple in the war with MS.
I'd never buy any Beatles music myself for personal reasons, but, I'd still be glad to see Apple score this coup.
(on the idea of the custom iPod, why don't they still offer the U2 version with the discount on the full U2 collection?...)

I bet tickets are being scalped alongside iPad 2s now :p The web page for registrants specifically said that attendees are required to present their passport or other government issued photo ID. Maybe you could scalp after you pick up your badge etc. but person buying it might risk spending a lot of money and then be turned away.

Hey, UNEMPLOYED
Looks to me like those are both 15" models, one just being a larger image. I can see that the speakers look somewhat more slender.
If this is the "new design of the MBP" it's nothing special. The scratch pad is larger, though. WHy on earth is APPLE limiting itself by using an extremely thin formfactor??
What diff does it make if the machine is 3 mm thicker, and has better sound, better heat dissipation etc.?
AND ALL SCREENS WOBBLE BECAUSE OF THE HINGE DESIGN. CLEARLY FAULTY ENGINEERING!:D
Here are some images of the banner, MBP 15 & 17[/QUOTE]

I could care less about the Beatles, but if this means the whole "Apple" issue is amicably and finally resolved, then I think it's outstanding. :)
Do you mean "couldn't care less", because otherwise your post is pretty confusing.
I'm not a big Beatles fan, but I'd probably buy 1 or 2 songs if they put em on iTunes. Even so, I think this would be a deal maker for a lot of people. Especially if they come out with a Beatles branded iPod.

I also think that whoever has the remaining rights to this material realise that its shelf-life is almost up. In 5-10 years time, the broad appeal of much of this material may have less relevance to the average consumer and its perceived market-value may be far less.
That's not a comment on the merits of The Beatles' music; just my view based on many of the comments I read by what I am assuming are younger music listeners.
I'm 43, many of these songs are ingrained into my memory from childhood, but the only Beatles albums I would possibly be interested in are maybe 2-4 remastered CDs; I'm not interested in downloads at all. But to be honest, I don't feel that by not currently owning them that my music collection is lacking at all.

You don't lose privacy, fair use, extensibility, programmability, style, ease of use, and productivity on PCs. I run Windows XP, Linux, FreeBSD, and Mac OS 7.6.1 on my Athlon 1400MHz. I don't lose those things you mention while using Linux or FreeBSD. Hell, I don't lose them even in Windows. I know what to avoid.
Well, I like to listen to music on an MP3 player. Windows does not natively support MP3. I don't like product activation, as it means I have to call and reactivate when I change a bunch of hardware, which I'm likely to do enough for it to be a problem. I don't like paying for an OS with an insecure foundation. I don't like paying for an OS which with IE 'removed' still manages to pop up ads in ... IE. I don't like a dos cli, which has some UNIX commands, but ususally requires DOS commands.
Extensibility. Let's see. Have you ever looked at the Microsoft.NET platform? It's an excellent platform for development. Microsoft.NET completely replaces their old ****ty Win32. In fact, Microsoft.NET isn't even tied to Win32. I run implementations of Microsoft.NET on Linux and FreeBSD. Microsoft.NET is the, if not one of the, most extensible application programming framework ever engineered. It takes the concept of SUN's Java and made it an unified framework for several specific languages of which are designed for specific types of programming, for example, C# should be used for general applications programming, VB.NET should be used for quick and simple solutions, JScript.NET for scripting, Eiffel.NET for mathematics, Delphi.NET for whatever Delphi was for. Best of all, you can even program dll's in separate languages and combine them in one powerful program. That's some serious leveraging you don't have in UNIX without making wrappers for each language. Microsoft has said bye bye to dll hell (Microsoft.NET actually adopts the UNIX versioning system. Before, it was conflicting versions of dll's that couldn't be installed at the same time. But now, you can have multiple dll's and no dll hell) Besides, I also run *n?x on my PC, that's extreme extensibility by using free OSes. I get benefits of UNIX on my PC as well.
.net is an entirely closed initiative. JScript is JavaScript crippled for IE only. C# is (from what I've heard) bad C++. I have tried to avoid .net for many reasons. I enjoy open standards. I like learning languages which are more likely to succeed in the broadest audience. I hate the whole .dll structure. COM/ASP services I have built in the past refused to scale well.
Outside of that, I see nothing wrong with .net, and some people will surely code for it, as long as its around.
Style. You're saying that PC users don't have style? Maybe their style is to buy affordable computers, run them fast, get **** done. Various people have different style flavors.
No what I'm saying is that Apple is a company that invest heavily in its industrial design, its UI development, etc. which gives it a high degree of style.
The hardware of Apple's line, love it or hate it, is highly stylized. The OS has a lot more visual appeal, and more thoughful and intuitive layout. It's bloody UNIX my Granny sends me email from. Windows is available as delivered in Marshmellow or 98 Mode. It just looks bad...
Ease of use. Windows XP is easy enough. Hell, command line UNIX is easy for me to use. Sure Mac OS X might be easier to use than Windows XP. But seriously, who cares. Windows has an established GUI that many people know how to use.
The ease of use argument is primarily focused opn productivity.
In Windows, when you empty the trash, an alert/confirmation box appears. You can then change focus to another window, burying the alert box, and freezing the OS, so you have to drill down through all the windows you have open to answer this alert before continuing.
Windows will take you through a great help tour in order to tell you it can't help you.
Little annoying counter-intuitive time wasters abound.
I have both, I use both, I code on both, and I just feel from experience that the Mac is a better environment to code on. As I said, I'm not rendering, so the raw speed advantages of x86 are lost to the clunkiness of the UI.
Productivity. Mac OS X is the worst OS for productivity at least for me. It's so frickin' slow drawing all the eye candy crap. At least in Windows XP you can turn them off. Ease of use does not necessarily equate to productivity. Ease of use *AND* GUI responsiveness sum to equate mostly what productivity. Windows XP has both. Mac OS X has only the ease of use while people need huge amounts of RAM on a lower end Mac to run it at least fast enough. Windows XP is usable on a Pentium II 233MHz with 128MB RAM just fine.
I will happily concede that RAM and system spec can make all the difference here, and that Windows will run on a broader base of machines.
My main machine is a DP867 with 2GB of RAM and a ATA133 RAID.
It is as responsive it can be.
