As much as I love them, all of Apple's designs are getting old. The Macbook (nee iBook) has looked the same (minus a few paint jobs) for over 5 years; the current iMac design harkens back to the eMac (yes, I know, its flatter, what an innovation...wheee), which in turn was highly derivative of the original iMac. The MacBook Pro is just an AluPB, which in turn was merely a revision of the original Titanium G4. Now, the "new" iPod nano is nothing more than a iPod mini that went on a diet, and the full iPod, although much sleeker than its predecessors, is still essentially the same design as the iPod that came out in 2001. And the story goes on: the Mac Pro, a warmed over PowerMac G5; the Airport/Airport extreme, essentially unchanged since its release; the Airport Express, a power adapter with flashing lights; the iSight, unchanged since its release; the Mighty Mouse, same design as the Apple Pro Mouse, etc. Essentially, the only new designs in the last three years have been: the Mac mini, the iPod shuffle, and the Cinema Displays, none of which could be considered to be attention-getters. Even the new, unreleased "iTV" is copying the Mac mini design. Not too impressive for a company which claims high design as a main benefit. Where is the new cube? the iMac (& G4)? the tiBook? There is nothing fresh or innovative about their current lineup, nothing exciting or innovative.Instead, its all inoffensively sterile, to my eyes; walking into an Apple store has become similar to walking into IKEA, nothing unexpected, just clean lines. It's like they've become artistically constipated. Or is this just what we get for Apple's new push on "competitive prices"?
In my opinion, its time for some fresh blood, someone with a new vision. And yes, I'm looking squarely at you, Steve and Jonathan. I want to be excited again, and not just by the "guts" of the computer. I, for one, miss the Macworlds of 5 years ago...

I don't know if they "legally" are required to, but even when your two year contract is up they don't change it to one of their "new plans"
They will allow you to be grandfathered in as long as you wish, and as long as you continue to pay your monthly bill. Even when you extend a new 2 year contract and buy a new phone, you are agreeing to keep the service for 2 years, but they will allow you to stay on your original plan. That's how we are allowed to have unlimited data and iPhone 4's.
Who says that they have to honor Grandfathering of Plans?

Try squeezing 26,000 songs on your iPhone. ;)
Nice library, but do you need it with you at all times? I used to think I did, but I've found that I don't need 11,000 songs with me all the time. I have songs in my library I haven't listened to in years. Another reason why the iPod classic is dying, Apple, and iTunes, have made it very easy to manage the music you actually listen to, and add it to your iPod.

Please. A Macbook costs about $1,000. There will be people who deliberately go for something cheaper, but the majority of people can _afford_ it. The "similarly performing system" to the mini tower is the iMac for $1199. And people who are poor but clever know that in the long term, quality is cheaper - usually the best thing to buy is the cheapest of the best, which would be for example the MacBook. It will still be running fine when you bought the second replacement for a cheaper laptop.
That $1199 iMac has lots of other wonderful features including a screen, but if you think it is anywhere close to the performance of a i7-2600 based PC (that go for $750 from HP/Dell) then you are delusional. To get something from Apple with an equivalent processor you are looking at a $2199 iMac or a $2499 Mac Pro. Doesn't matter that in the long term the Mac could be a better value, some people can't justify that huge price difference or paying additional for features they don't need or want or cannot afford to.
Again Macs are a premium product and because of that Apple will hit a ceiling of those who can afford or justify buying their products.

I have to descent from the mass and say I was not impressed by the Keynote. What the hell is with Safari still having the brushed metal interface, as well as the finder, etc...
I thought they were finally going to get rid of that and get some consistency in their GUI.
Did you stop to think for just a second that Apple is not showing the new Finder yet, and that the Finder included with Leopard right now is the Tiger one?

No more PowerBook. Love the new Mac Mini, I would put in an SSD, but they're still too expensive, and I really don't need one. Its extremely quiet anyway.
Stock Mac Mini 2.4ghz + 4gb of RAM (Crucial off Newegg)
20" Cinema Display (I'm going to mount that powerbrick behind the desk, I hate looking at it)
Bose Companion 2 speakers
64gb iPad WiFi
160gb iPod Classic

Wow! I love your setup.

not to mention all that other nice stuff on your desk :)

I just went to the Apple store and asked the dude there if he knows anything about when the new Macbook pros come out. He said it might be a while but it could even be tomorrow. They guy sounded genuine and I'm thinking if they wanted to release them tomorrow (March 16th); they would have known something by now. The other thing is that from the marketing point of view, I don't think it makes sense to release them before iPad. It's the first time iPad is being introduced so they probably want a strong initial sale to generate more buzz and momentum; they probably don't want people looking at a new Macbook pro when there's an iPad sitting right next to it.
Just my thought.
I used to work at an apple store until Christmas and we were always the last to know things, we found out when the public found out eg the iMac launch, that's why they don't have the new stuff in stores the day it's announced, it stays in the back with someone who's signed a non disclosure agreement.

My experience is that most of the people who say those kinds of things don't actually know anything about music, and may have very little musical education. People who know music either by critical listening, study, or learning an instrument, while they may have their preferences, wouldn't dismiss an entire artist's catalog based on their historical time or genre.
A few do. But they tend to go the other way and say anything written AFTER some period is rubbish.
But you are right. Most who dismiss an entire catalog based on the year are not really listening. Any bass player alive today needs to study Paul McCartney (and many others too). Paul really did open up what a bass player can play.
BTW have you heard Paul's newer CD "driving Rain" his bass playing, I think has improved and because it is a solo album they actually feature Paul on bass as a solo.
All that said, I think I'm still a fan but I don't listen much any more. I've heard it all enough times. When the re-mastered CDs came out I had to hear it. Wat caught me this time, and that is after learning a little about music is their timing on the vocals, it's dead-on.

hey - heres an idea Apple - rather than enter the world of gimmicks and toys, why dont you spend a little more time sorting out your pathetically expensive and crap server line up?
or are you really aiming to become a glorified consumer gimmicks firm?
uhhh, yes!

I don't know what its worth, but looking at the Best Buy website I find that about half of the stores in my area (VA) are out of stock of the various models of 15 inch MBP and the 17 inch in on backorder. Is this a sign of a refresh ???

Even though I've worked in the broadcast industry for over 25 years, as a cameraman I don't consider myself to be a professional editor at all. In fact, I probably know how to use only about 1% of the full potential of Final Cut Pro.
However, we as operators are sometimes required to send either edited track and rushes or complete edited packages from locations either locally or abroad, and in broadcast quality.
The ease of use in acquiring footage using a tapeless medium via Log & Transfer (in our case, P2 @ DVCPRO HD), editing on a native timeline and then transferring back to a card with no loss from transcoding is phenomenal. But FCP 6 & 7 had some caveats which I'd hoped would be addressed - especially with our codec of choice.
Our network decided to go with P2 because it was the most solid and diverse codec available for news, current affairs, sports and documentary use - being MPEG-4 native with an Intra-base (with no GOP). Metadata is an important aspect of our workflow, and older versions of FCP relied on third party applications in order to import metadata fields along with our clips.
So far, there's not been much noise as to whether Apple have addressed further P2 support for:

I think it was worth mentioning, especially in the context of a discussion on cameras and the quality of the images they produce. It's good to remember that these things are tools and not be obsessed to the point of ignoring the creativity that is required to make these tools useful.
If common sense was more common, the megapixel myth wouldn't exist :)

Are you kidding? Netflix destroyed it with streaming. Disney and Sony aren't even advertising for it anymore. The Blu Ray players are being sold dirt cheap at clearance sales because it's a dying/dead format. I haven't heard a word about it on TV ads to further seal the deal.
And I never liked it anyway, the 25 GB disc wasn't filled all the way because of the stupidly lossy compression, and it was expensive. We unplugged our Blu Ray player and replaced it with a TiVo box with Netflix streaming, which happens to be a lot cheaper than Blu Ray and much easier.
And Apple never used it :)
I've noticed many blu ray disks now come with digital copies. I prefer that. One even had a survey asking how important the digital copy was. So perhaps this will be a nice combination for a while.
I ended up getting a PS3 for the blu ray player. For a while it got most usage as a netflix player. Now the appleTV handles that. So occasionally it gets used now for blu ray. I still do not own any games for it. Someday when I have time for it I'll get a game or two. I think if you are getting a blu ray player, PS3 is the way to go though as you can use it for more than just the blu ray.

But do Americans REALLY want to be building laptops/ipods/ipads? i think society in developed countries such as the states has vigorously changed since 20 years ago.
I wouldn't want to man the production line but i'd love to setup automation, especially if the price was right.
But the environmental impact that manufacturing has is huge. I'll take a discount on my products if it means the chinese will ruin their environments faster than we can.
