Okay, I mostly agree with the comments that this is being overblown because the AE card inside the Mac is not being used. But....
Two things:
1) I re-iterate my comment much earlier that this does point to a long-term problem that has to do with the fact that there is no real non-discoverable mode available in most implementations of the Wi-Fi client driver, as there is with Bluetooth devices and with Wi-Fi host drivers in routers (why? because I'm pretentious! :p ).
2) I don't completely understand this business of an external card being used. Can anyone help me out? So an external card was used in OS X, correct? Don't most OS X external cards that do work, work based off the driver that is shipped with OS X and not with a driver provided separately by the card vendor? Installing drivers in OS X is very rare. Does the unnamed external card use the same OS X driver used for the AE card, or does it use a different one? If it uses the same one, it's not clear that the driver in OS X is completely safe.
Not panicking here...but this seems like an opportunity to improve computer security for us all...

Too right. My Rev. A will have to be completely dead before I replace it with a 13" MacBook. The only way I'll buy another laptop before then is if Apple come out with a 12" MBP.
Not slagging off the MacBooks by saying that. I just love my PB12". Best laptop ever IMO.
I agree with you there is just something about the 13" MacBook that doesn't fit but the 12" its PERFECT

LTE is the only possible feature that makes postponing the iPhone 5 to the fall a smart decision. I am not convinced it's going to happen, but I don't understand all these comments about how this fall would be "too soon." Most of the major phones released this year have 4G capability. Anyone who buys an iPhone 5 in Sept/Oct will be stuck with it until almost 2013, when LTE will be widespread on both AT&T and Verizon.
I can't possibly imagine anyone (who lives on the coasts, anyway) buying a smartphone in Sept/Oct 2011 that is not LTE capable.
I think Apple is on to something here. No matter what amazing features the iPhone 5 has, if it came in June or July and it didn't have LTE capability, then the refrain across its lifetime would be: "Yeah, it's a great phone, but it's not 4G."
After all the antennagate hype, Apple doesn't need to build a similar failure right into the iPhone 5. And, as others have pointed out, this allows Apple to go back to its previous naming convention, by following the iPhone 4 with the iPhone 4G.

imho the reason why apple hasnt filled the void of a 12"powerbook equivilent is because they plan on expanding their overall product range. more portable notebooks, tablets, etc. all in the scope of vision

Your windows installation will not hurt your OSX installation.
They don't see eeach other, and windows is on a seperate partition.
Stop calling people a moron if you don't know what you are talking about.
Boot camp basically eliminated the need to ever buy a PC.
It was an incredibly smart move.
Windows may not be able to read or write to the mac partition, but it will still be there. There is nothing stopping a _really_ malicious virus from messing around with the partition table to bring the whole thing crashing down.
IIRC It was because of the problem with viruses corrupting boot records that microsoft cludged their disk partitioning software FDISK to include the /MBR switch to allow it to wipe previously inaccessible boot records.
However, for those people who just need windows for one or two programs, and who have the awareness to patch and lock it down correctly, then bootcamp is a good idea.

I do *not* like the G5's case design. It's bulky as heck and all those tiny holes bug me for some reason. It's also a very inconveniently-large size, IMO. Couldn't Apple have done some more shrinking when they created this new monster?
Although bravo to Apple for replacing the ageing PowerMac G5 with something new and faster.
Now that we've got a Mac Pro, what about a plain, old "Mac"? ;)

Most iPods are used in situations where our eyes aren't free to focus on a screen however good--commuting, jogging, biking or whatever. To compete with ebooks from Sony and others, this ebook iPod needs to be able to read text aloud as well as display it on screen.
It also needs to bookmark text and audio files well, so we can resume where we left off and shift between reading and listening without losing our place. And that means multiple bookmarks, not just a mark for the last place we were. (Marking text like a post-it note would also be a plus.)
In addition, iTunes needs to be able to download text books and newscasts (free and by subscription) as easily and automatically as it now does podcasts. Pushing content is always better than pulling it.
Those are things existing ebooks don't do. Add those features to an ebook iPod, and Apple will be miles ahead of the competition. Sony and (soon) Microsoft will be eating their dust.

You have to consider the problems that Apple has had with heat and portables of late. There would likely be heat issues with such a portable, which makes it even more plausible that Apple won't make such a portable.
I think this 10.5" 3lbs sounds possible. I don't think they would ever try to fit it with high-end proc's which would be like begging for heat issues. That Lifebook mentioned earlier is also running with "only" 1.2GHz Pentium M which I'm sure is enough for a machined sized that small. But 2000$ is quite a big price to pay. That's why I think this could be a place for Apple to take control over. But not anytime soon though.

This is fantastic, fantastic news! It is so so so cool, and its really made my day. I have been waiting for the imac update and glad that it came around this time. I have been waiting since March and it has been agonising.
Congratulations for those who have been waiting for one. The time has come. Im sure all apple revisions will come in due course, perhaps in time for leopard when it comes out.
Bring on the ipods next week.
Macrumours have been spot on!

does anyone else feellike the ipod needs to be quicker? some times it takes like five to ten seconds for it to start playing songs of movies, maybe the interface is so simple that i tell it what to do too fast and get ahead of it? also if you listen to music and browse your pics some times the music skipps. maybe the nvidia chips will cure this?
I feel the same... My sisters 5g takes days to play a video... My mini on the other hand takes splitseconds.

Here we go with the "You said this, so you must be this..." stereotype...
I know guys where even though they are the "bread winner" or contribute greatly to the funds, they have to approve EVERYTHING through the Wife - whereas the Wife can spend as she pleases....
Happy Wife, Happy Life...
Not into that type of relationship.
Just tried to answer the question that was asked... Not stereotyping at all

here's some of my speculation about this update...
While we don't know exactly how the Firmware update was designed, it would appear as though the update will simply ignore symptoms of a SMC short circuit to allow the laptop to continue operating. If this is the case it may degrade a MacBook's ability to detect true over-heat situations.
AppleInsider had previously reported that a new MacBook logic board was under development to eliminate the root hardware issue, but a release date was not known.
Perhaps it allows the MacBook to recognize the output you would get from a short-circuited thermometer cable and ignore it, while still monitoring its regular output (at least when it's not short-circuited). Or maybe it decreases the threshold at which the fans kick it, preventing the heat sink from expanding as much. I doubt that Apple would provide a firmware update that would instruct the MacBook to ignore all information from the thermometer, as this would be a recipe for disaster in no time.

My wife loved this announcement seeing as she has been complaining about the decreased battery life in our 12 inch PB lately.
I for one salute Apple in its efforts to ensure a safe computing environment.
And, my salute has NOTHING to do with the fact that my 18 month old and very used iBook battery currently only holds a 10 minutes charge.
:) :) :)
Crossing my fingers I have an unsafe battery...

Well said. I have to agree with you.
Most friends and relatives bring up the clock speed and price. But when they see how the machine looks on my desk, when they step up to OS X and take it for a spin, they see why I could take a speed "loss" for all the luxury that Apple brings to the user experience.
Now, a lot of us rumor-heads are focused on bleeding-edge. And it kinda burns us that Intel/Athlon chips are closing in on 3GHz and we've just broken 1 gig. But we (rumor-heads) are the few, and PC marketing no longer seems to focus on speed. And I believe that Apple is slowly turing more heads out there.

Having spent a fair amount of time living in a rural environment, I would like to add my distaste for Wal-Mart. They move into an area with their "low prices"
and put all the local stores out of business. There are hundreds of little towns in rural areas of the south that have been devastated by the arrival of a Wal-Mart. I have had business dealings with Wal-Mart and I will tell you they do bully suppliers. I had a shipment to them with the standard invoice terms of 2% discount if paid within 10 days or net invoice if paid withing 30 days. Well, Wal-Mart paid in 90 days and took the discount! PLus they gave me a hrad time when I called them on it! I have not shopped with them in over 15 years, and I plan on keeping it that way. The fact that they sell 40% of the DVDs sold during the Christmas buying cycle does give them clout with the studios, and that is unfortunate. However, I believe that volume could be made up elsewhere, so I am not sure that the studio heads would knuckle under. They have more and more been taking a long term view, so that may diminish Wal-Mart's clout. Let us hope so.

Like the world has done such a bang up job of being trustworthy, lol. Apple has to do what they believe they have to do to survive and thrive. They haven't done it by the conventional/popular ways of thinking. I never said that Apple is perfect or that their approval process is just right. But it is what it is. People aren't all trustworthy, that's probably a reason why they clamp down (whether right or wrong in certain instances) on app approval.
That's exactly the point I was making, by pointing out how Facebook also has an approval process for their applications (Like those games people play from their Facebook pages). I was not advocating that Apple approve iPhone apps by default.
