This is how it works. If you file for your 485 now, the next thing that is expected from you is to wait for the receipt, that would take 3 to 4 weeks. Then you will get finger print notice, that might come in three months time. Once you are done with all this then check the processing date of the respective service centre where you have filed your 485 application.
Now coming to the question of unmarried filers, if the principal aplicant's date of marriage is beofe his or her 485 adjudication of adjustment of status, there are two ways principal applicant file for 485 for his or her spouse. The spouse can travel to US on H4 and file for 485 or the principal applicant can do consular processing. Now consular processing is good for those cases whosw w PD is current but since retrogression can kick in anytime it is better to travel to US on H4 and file for 485.
Another important aspect is if you file 485, EAD, Advance Parole and you use EAD, you loose your H1 status, hence on EAD you can not bring in your wife. So unmarried filersn it goes like thisn you go ahead and fileyour 485, then go to your home country brng in your wife on H4n as you have aleast s months of time if NSC, TSC or CSC 485 processing is not current and it is hown 1 month for receipt of 485, three months of time for getting the finger print notice and you can postpone by another month of FP by rescheduling it to another month. So literally you have 4 to 5 months to get married and by that time the dates will retrogress again. So dont worry, just go ahead file your 485 and start looking to get married. The rest of the dhol dhamaka can be done later. I don't want to get married and then have to wait another 5 years to bring in my wifey. My PD is Dec 2003.

It is completely unpredictable. Actually when you file I485 USCIS does not process FIFO(They are supposed to). For example there are 10k gc are left for the year. First they will process the applications which are cleared FP based on PD and receipt date. Always risk is there when filing without marriage. You are safe till USCIS starts process your application. When they take your application for processing then you cannot add your spouse. Also if CIR decides to process backlogs faster then also you will be in problem. Best option is if your marriage is already fixed do it within 3 months and file GC before PD is backdated. You need not file July first. You can wait till Jul15 to see next VB and decide.

They do care about employees. They just can't handle immigration and visa issues. It is too complicated for a lot of employees. For a lot of employers, the term H1b visa or sponsership gives "jitters".
While a lot of employers look at things from their perspective, they do understand all issues that you face. It all depends on how important you are and if your absence would make a difference. We are getting started out as a new thread towards this administrative costs.
As a couple of members mentioned that the core will not take any money from the funds members contributed, and its is really unfortunate that Aman + all the core team have to spend a lot of money out of their pocket. I am not a CPA but have seen that a lot of NOP do set aside administrative funds. That how the organization would work. The good ones will have only 10% of funds towards administrative cost. The BEST ONE LIKE IV has NONE (No money for administrative cost!!!). I am sure the core will not want to dive into the funds people are giving BUT can members send money seperately to set up an administrative fund.
I like khodalmd idea, I know not everyone is going to chip in, but if we have atleat 1000 people we can all send $100, so that atleast the core team dont take on the financial burden of the entire community. People sent flowers, a lot of people sent flowers...I am sure atleat 1000 appreciative members can shell out $100 for IV.
I am game for the $100 suggested by anzerraja (I think)

This might come as a surprise to some of you, but someone needs to say it out loud. GET A LIFE FOLKS!!!! there is more to life then EB, GC and all. it seem all we desi's can think of is how to get a green card so we can live here with peace and never have to worry bout getting laid off or anything.
Few points:
1) having gc is a privilege not a right.
2) US has every right to choose whom they want to have in their country.
3) If getting PR or citizenship of a western country is the goal there are many countries which have a fair point based system.
4) Considering the number of fraud's committed by Indian body shoppers and people who use them, i am not surprised USCIS is extra careful when it comes to Indian applications. Anyone who got his wife with no exp with software dev an h1b visa from some cheat in Jersey knows what i am talking bout . My freind got his wife an H1 after showing she knew software testing even though her major was fine arts and all she was good at was web surfing :)
5) have a back up. i came here in 2001 as student and have seen it all. I am on h1b since 2004. i knew we have too many people whose sole aim in life is a American GC. to avoid becoming one of those who check processing dates first thing in morning, i applied for Canadian PR, got it in 8 months and i am not even gonna bother applying for labor, i-140 and all those precious life controlling documents.
Wake up friends, you have options. Don't let your life depend on you application status.

Right now what is the status with QGA? I mean we have 30k they need 200k. She also confirmed biometrics and Namecheck are cleared as well. I struggled with that part since, they went vermont cause of EAC receipt number....

Where u take SBI or ICICI they will not tell you the date on which the actually transaction was taken place. Yes its right that they keep money with them for 2-3 days and remit only when they see that exchange rate will increase.
I have used both, in my personal opinion SBI offers good rate than ICICI.
Again, this may be not correct because we don't know the time they update their web site to reflect the current exchange rate.
I know ICICI not good in terms of every thing, I had very very bad experience with them couple of times, then I have switched to SBI 3 years ago, now I am using SBI NRI account as well as their GLS services to transfer money.
Coming back to conversation rate, SBI will update only once in the morning and will give you that rate on the day money will be transferred into your INDIA account (Normally 5th working day), I have checked lot of times to confirm the same and every time it is correct so far (3+years).
Now a days they have also opened customer support with toll free no, where you can call them from here.....which is really good....
